A pleasant country with its pros and cons

Hi everyone!
About us: We’re a family of two adults, a two-and-a-half-year-old child and a cat. We work remotely.

We lived in Indonesia (Bali), Argentina (Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata and Córdoba), and now we’ve moved to Paraguay. We started in Hohenau but retreated to Encarnación after a month. We liked it here and stayed.

A little advice before I begin:
Our experiences have given us some perspective and a basis for comparison. In our view, the most important thing when moving to any country is not to build up illusions or pin your hopes on anything. You won’t really understand a place until you’re actually there, in the surroundings where you intend to live, judging it by your own criteria, outlook, habits, feelings and circumstances. And nobody can ever take everything into account or tell you about every little detail and nuance of a particular place.

Our impressions of Paraguay:
Hohenau. It wasn’t for us. The first and main reason was the communal and religious nature of life there. As far as we could work out, it was Evangelical Christianity, although we’re not certain. We accept and respect everyone’s faith, but we’re not comfortable when it forms the basis of everyday life, education and so on. We wanted a more relaxed atmosphere. We’d had enough rules and conventions in our previous life.

That said, Hohenau has a relatively close-knit Russian-speaking community where you can meet nice people and build a social circle, as there are a whole two places where everything happens and everyone gets together. There’s also beautiful nature all around, but you need a car to enjoy it.

Housing isn’t a problem here. You can find people in Telegram chats who will happily help you find something, sometimes without charging a commission, to suit any taste and budget. We spent a month in a lovely, large, newly built house constructed by Germans for just USD 750 plus utilities. Others live just as comfortably for USD 300.

Encarnación. We really liked it. A clean, well-maintained waterfront with a lovely river beach and a variety of cafés with music drifting out of them makes for a pleasant atmosphere. Everything is close by: shops, schools and kindergartens. There are things to do with a child. Overall, life feels easy, with nothing weighing on you.

The community is different from Hohenau’s. There’s only one place where residents gather, and not everyone goes there. So finding people to socialise with can be harder at first. If that’s something you need, you’ll have to seek out and join groups that have already formed around shared interests.

Renting a property is no problem, just as in Hohenau. A lovely estate agent helped us. We chose a property ourselves on her website, she explained the terms, and we went to see it. Everything suited us, so we signed the contract and have been happily living here. A couple of issues emerged later, but they were minor, and we fixed them ourselves. The rent here is USD 350 plus utilities, which makes us very happy: in Argentina, we never paid less than USD 800 for houses that were worse.

Our impressions of prices:
Food prices are reasonable, and putting together a grocery basket that suits you isn’t difficult. Cafés, restaurants and buffets are affordable. Appliances are more complicated: you have to hunt around and compare, and some items cost even more than in Argentina despite being older models, which surprised us. Building materials and furniture aren’t exactly cheap either. Prices for small household items such as towels, bedding, cutlery and plates are reasonable. Overall, it’s much like everywhere else these days.

As for a monthly budget, you can get by on USD 1,000, live comfortably on USD 1,500, and at USD 2,000 or more, you won’t have to pay too much attention to prices.

Downsides:
For us personally, Paraguay has one major drawback: the lack of online marketplaces. To find and buy something, you first need to find and buy a witch’s flying mortar, then fly all over Paraguay in it, asking everyone at every turn where to get what you need and how much it costs. Not to mention that local businesses don’t put any information about themselves on maps, on the web or on social media. Or they posted something sometime before the Common Era, and it’s no longer relevant. They’re quite something!)

But we’re already used to Latin America. It’s more or less like this everywhere here, and it doesn’t upset us. We were leaving civilisation behind, after all. And if necessary, Argentina is right next door, literally across the bridge, and online marketplaces work fine there. So we’ve adapted and settled in. We didn’t get our hopes up or have any illusions, but it turned out to suit us. We’ll stay for a while and see how things go.

And don’t be too hard on Paraguay. It’s a decent place. It has given some people work, others sunshine and warmth, friends or love, peace of mind, or a ticket to a different life. What that life looks like is different for everyone. Every experience is still an experience.

Good luck and good spirits to everyone! 🤝🙌🏼
